Zentangle is a relatively simple and easy form of art, that can be used to create astounding designs, images, and patterns! Personally, this was the first time I had ever heard of Zentangle and was impressed at how simple it was to make something look so interesting when just following simple instruction! This was the first piece of art that I had completed in a long time. Essentially, the line is an artists best friend when completing zentangle art, for it is the basis and foundation of all patterns that are created in the piece. Elements of art and design like lines, contrast, and unity are all used within zentangle; however, depending on the goal of the artist, even more could be incorporated!

MODIFIED GYOTAKU
Before this class, I had never heard of gyotaku, art and design elements, or zentangle! All of this is so new to me! For my first gyotaku, I chose the traditional black ink, instead of using a colored paint. I wanted to make something that was representative of the original technique. Choosing all black was very deliberate, not only does it look clean and traditional, but adding hues to the background can really make it pop! The background color I chose was a volt yellow, it can be seen more clearly in person, the picture quality and camera used did not capture the yellow as well as I had wished. To construct gyotaku, one must have a model, either a real fish, or preferably a fish mold, that can be used in order to create a gyotaku piece. To begin, one needs to place a piece of rice paper over a fish or fish mold that has some sort of colored paint on it. Next, gently press the paper on the fish so as to get an accurate representation of the fishes form onto the paper. Afterwards, wet mount your gyotaku onto a board by applying a rice paste onto the very edges of the work. After a day or so, the gyotaku can be taken down. In the beginning the gyotaku looked very plain, but after I had gone through the process of making one I thought it was special, I made it with my own two hands and I could say that it was mine. I had a little help, but overall it was self directed, I had created an entire new piece, unique from any other! Becoming self directed is a skill we must learn in order to grow up, it's something that we need in order to prosper and thrive. Even by doing small things, like doing what's right even when no one is around, those actions are what lead us to become self directed people. I prefer doing things independently, I get the chance to find out how to do things in a unique way, different from everyone. Things I do in order to become self directed are simple, like meditating or lifting weights without a partner, I can find what my body and mind need by doing these, and those two skills are immensely important when trying to build a structured life.
